Shiatsu
Shiatsu, which simply translates to mean: finger pressure, is a holistic therapy originating from China and perfected in Japan. It is a form of massage, but you remain fully dressed except for removing your shoes and jewellery.
In oriental therapy there are meridians running through the body, which are like blood vessels, except that they carry energy to anywhere in the body that requires help, such as tiredness, stress, backache etc.. If the meridians become blocked, unless cleared, disease will follow.
Acupuncture is also based on this principle and is several thousand years old. In Shiatsu, the cause of the problem, be it an ache or stress, is sorted out and eliminated through the meridians. A treatment will involve a consultation before the first treatment, then you will experience a nice relaxed stretching of the limbs, muscles and ligaments before having certain acupoints massaged. It is normal to feel very relaxed after a treatment and free from any form of previous stress build up.
Practitioners often travel to eastern countries to study and learn energy work which is an essential part of the treatment. This energy is transmitted through to the client where needed to boost the immune system into self healing. Even a fit person will benefit in feeling refreshed and full of life.
Anyone can gain from having a regular treatment and Shiatsu is suitable for a number of ailments that do not respond well to western treatment, i.e stress, backache, P.M.T. headaches, migraine etc..
